Customs Clearance Specialist, Johannesburg

SkyNet South Africa (Pty) Ltd requires an individual to fill the above position. The successful incumbent will be based at OR Tambo International Airport and will report directly to the FD

Organise and manage a team in clearing, documentation and logistics for the smooth running of operations in the system and in accordance with SARS and statutory requirements

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:                                                        

  • Responsible for the customs stops/queries
  • Manage entry clerks, quality checks and entry submissions with accuracy
  • Supervise the process of destructions or abandon cargo
  • Execute processes in accordance with all customs policies and procedures and requirements
  • Communicate with Customs/ SARS on an ongoing basis
  • Handling customs refunds
  • Applying for import / export permits / stage consignments
  • Compilation of required reports
  • Reports to management on changes in the industry
  • Ensure record keeping of all documentation
  • Applying the legislative parameters of the Customs & Excise Act, Rules & Regulations at different levels throughout the Supply Chain
  • Exercise sound judgment in decision making.
  • Apply urgency in work done – report faults urgently, take action urgently; results orientated


  • Must have strong working relationship with SARS and understand all their requirements
  • To be fully aware of all the necessary SARS and statutory documentation and correct processes to be effective
  • Good planning and organising skills
  • Computer literate (MS Outlook and Excel) at advanced level
  • Oversee the customs department
  • High numeracy level
  • Extensive Knowledge of all SARS / Customs policies and procedures and requirements
  • Good relationships with Customs/ SARS
  • Extensive experience handling customs refunds
  • Adequate experience applying for import / export permits / stage consignments
  • Sound communication skills both written & verbal
  • South African citizen
  • Tertiary Qualification in logistics or supply chain management is advantageous
  • Min 6 years’ experience in customs / imports / freight forwarding industry
  • Suitable qualification in terms of the Customs and Excise Act, Rules and Regulations (preferably a tertiary qualification in International Customs Law and Administration).
  • Management of a team of at least 8 resources for more than 3 years
